At this year’s Feedback Summit, we asked our community to share their feedback stories – what moments frame their feedback experiences, what drives their work forward. We were glad to use the storytelling platform built by Memria, a software and services company building tools for nonprofits, advocacy organizations, libraries, and other institutions to facilitate story collection.
Memria’s founder Louis Bickford facilitated a LabStorm in June which highlighted how stories can complement other forms of feedback by enabling people to record and submit their stories and experiences in their own voice.
The LabStorm sparked our interest in Memria’s potential for the feedback community. We decided to give it a try to collect stories from those attending the Feedback Summit about how feedback has made a difference in their lives and what we can do to make feedback the expected thing.
Memria cuts across this year’s Summit themes – ‘Equity and Inclusion’ and ‘Carrots, Sticks, and Tools’ – as a tool that enables organizations, institutions and social enterprises to literally hear the voices of people they may not otherwise be able to hear because of distance, cost, or power dynamics. Collecting these stories created a space for all feedback community voices to be heard.
The stories we collected will inform our collective work of using feedback to make the world a more equitable place.
We invited stories with four prompts:
- When is the last time you felt like you were really part of something bigger – a movement of some type of collective action? Can you imagine feedback becoming a “movement”? What would it take?
- Tell us about a time when you got some really uncomfortable feedback. What did it feel like? How did you respond? What was their reaction to your response? Looking back, would you have done it differently? Do you wish they had responded differently?
- Tell us about a time when you gave someone else some really uncomfortable feedback. What did it feel like? How did they respond? Looking back, would you have done it differently?
- Tell us about a time when you wanted to give someone important or critical feedback but decided not. What kept you from doing it? What happened as a result of your not speaking up? Thinking back, how might you have overcome that reluctance?
